Lesson 5

Save and Manage Contacts

Saving people as contacts means you never have to remember a phone number again. Just tap a name to call or text them.

First, tell us which phone you have

Not sure which you have?

If your phone has an apple on the back, it’s an iPhone. If it has anything else, it’s almost certainly an Android.

  1. Step 1 of 7

    Open the Contacts app

Find the Contacts app. Its icon is usually the outline of a person's head and shoulders.

On your iPhone: On iPhone, look for the Contacts app, or open the Phone app and tap Contacts at the bottom.

On your Android: On Android, it may be on the home screen or in your app drawer, on a blue or green background.

Contacts is just your phone's address book. Adding people here is safe and easy.

  2. Step 2 of 7

    Start a new contact

Tap the plus sign (+) to add a new person.

On your iPhone: On iPhone, tap the + in the top-right corner.

On your Android: On Android, the + button is usually at the bottom-right or top of the screen. If asked where to save, choose your Google Account so it's backed up.

Saving to your Google or Apple account means your contacts are copied safely and won't be lost if you get a new phone.

  3. Step 3 of 7

    Type the name and number

Tap the blank next to Name and type the person's name. Then tap the Phone blank and type their number. You can add their email too, if you like.

You can add a photo as well, so their face shows up on screen when they call.

  4. Step 4 of 7

    Save the contact

Tap Save to keep the new contact.

On your iPhone: On iPhone, tap Done in the top-right corner.

On your Android: On Android, Save is in the top-right corner. On some phones it looks like a check mark.

That's it. Their name will now appear whenever they call you.

  5. Step 5 of 7

Save a number you just dialed

If you typed a number in the Phone app and want to keep it, you can turn it into a contact.

On your iPhone: On iPhone, on the Keypad tap the number you entered, then tap Add Number and Create New Contact, fill in the name, and tap Done.

On your Android: On Android, after entering the number tap Create new contact, fill in the name, and tap Save.

This saves you from typing the same number twice.

  6. Step 6 of 7

Bring in contacts from a SIM card

If your contacts are saved on a SIM card from an old phone, you can copy them onto your new phone.

On your iPhone: On iPhone, open Settings, tap Contacts, then tap Import SIM Contacts.

On your Android: On Android, open Contacts, tap the menu, tap Settings, tap Import, choose SIM card, check the names you want, and tap Import.

This copies the names over without changing anything on the SIM card.

  7. Step 7 of 7

    Find your own phone number

If someone asks for your number and you can't remember it, your phone knows it.

On your iPhone: On iPhone, open the Phone app, tap Contacts, and your own number is listed at the very top under 'My Card.'

On your Android: On Android, open Settings, tap About phone, and look for your phone number.

It's very common not to know your own number by heart. Now you know just where to find it.
